Karena itu pula ia tak terlalu antusias saat harus berangkat ke Vatikan untuk mendalami keyakinannya. Tapi seperti kata orang, tak ada yang tahu ke mana takdir akan membawa kita dan pertemuan Michael dengan seorang pastur bernama Lucas (Anthony Hopkins) pula yang mengubah sisi pandang Michael. Michael berangkat ke Vatikan untuk belajar exorcism atau pengusiran setan. Karena tak terlalu yakin, Michael pun tak terlalu serius dalam mempelajarinya. Baru setelah bertemu Lucas, prinsip Michael mulai goyah. Meski awalnya skeptis namun perlahan Michael mulai percaya pada hal-hal gaib yang berada di luar nalar manusia. Bagaimana tidak, Lucas membawanya ikut dalam ritual pengusiran setan dan di sana Michael menyaksikan banyak kejadian aneh yang tak bisa dijelaskannya dengan logika. Lucas memang bukan exorcist biasa. Ia punya metode yang sangat unik. Lucas membawa Michael Kovak masuk ke dalam sisi gelap dari keyakinannya dan bertemu dengan para iblis yang menghuni dunia kegelapan. Berkat Lucas pula Michael sadar bahwa tak semuanya bisa dijelaskan dengan akal. Kadang diperlukan sebuah keyakinan yang sangat kuat untuk bisa melakukan sesuatu.
